*gloating*

In our travels today, my brother and I passed the local bookstore a couple times and it occurred to me... Harry Potter #6 just came out... It was at least worth checking on. Sure enough, when I asked for it, the lady at the desk smiled and said they certainly did have it in stock and ran off to go fetch a copy. So, without standing in long lines or waiting up 'til midnight, I'm now the proud owner of a copy of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (British edition, what's more :)). I was in the process of reading Huxley's Island, but it didn't stand a chance when brought face to face with this new arrival :).

:) While dad went to a pet store yesterday, I went a few stores down to the Barnes and Noble on the corner. At first, I thought the group of kids against the wall was part of a stalled van trip or something (due to the fact there was a guy working on his van right there with them), but as I rounded the corner and saw that the line stretched down the sidewalk all the way to the door (a good 40 yds), I realized I had been mistaken. It still took the black witch's hat on one of the people in line for me to realize what these people were in line for.

It was then that a middle-aged man in a business suit (and a rather worn look in his eyes) came out of the store and saw the crowd. A smile, a half-laugh to himself (trying to decide whether it was funny enough to keep laughing on an audible level), and the difference in perspective was amazing. Authors would love to have people lining up for the release of their books like that...but in the end, the bubble pops, and the next bill comes due.

:) And then I went into the bookstore and got lost in the world for the better part of twenty minutes.

::sighs happily:: We got a copy at Sam's Club for half price...that's about $16...and the sister has finished it...and I'm on about chapter four...and Rowling just gets better educated with every installment.

Remember Latin III, Catullus's Ad Inferias? It reminded me. So I append it (but not my translation, because I don't remember it:-( ).

Multas per gentes et multa per aequora uectus

aduenio has miseras, frater, ad inferias,

ut te postremo donarem munere mortis

    et mutam nequiquam alloquerer cinerem.

quandoquidem fortuna mihi tete abstulit ipsum.

heu miser indigne frater adempte mihi,

nunc tamen interea haec, prisco quae more parentum

tradita sunt tristi munere ad inferias,

    accipe fraterno multum manantia fletu,

atque in perpetuum, frater, aue atque uale.

Heh, Carolyn, Cassie did the same thing- bought a copy at WalMart for about the same- and I've just finished reading it after waiting for her to finish her few-hour marathon session. What is it with these younger sisters who read so quickly?
