PS to the Last
This summer, I think I have determined that, should I do this Foreign Service thing for a living, I will bring some warm-blooded, animate being along with me. (The top two on the list right now are “husband” and “dog.” The former would be preferable, I think, because you can take husbands more places, you wouldn’t have to quarantine them, and they are capable of engaging in conversation. But I cannot go about proposing to men, so a plan B was created, which depends entirely on my own initiative. Hence, “dog.” Yet this is rather a digression…)
All of this was begun to say that I am being visited, starting tomorrow, by a most excellent “warm-blooded, animate” being: Daniel (my brother). He will be making his belated senior trip to Riga, where the two of us will turn the town upside down with our adventures :)… at least for a three and a half day weekend, after which time I will have to go to back work and leave him to get into mischief by himself… which I am fully sure he will be able to do :). I am a very happy person :).

I laughed out loud in surprise when I read your first three sentences, and then I repeated them to my brother who was standing nearby. He enjoyed them too.
Have a lovely visit with your bro. I suppose that is one nice thing about my summer, despite the overall staying-in-one-placeishness. I have my family. :)

I've been thinking about going overseas short term after I graduate, and that is my one concern about it: loneliness. If I would go overseas, I would either want to do it very short-term, or go with another person.
Oh, you are lucky to be an animal person. I don't like animals very much, so if I would go overseas I'd have to settle on a girlfriend or a husband to come with me...
"But I cannot go about proposing to men..." yes, that is an unfortunate reality, isn't it? Hmm... I suppose we are left to adopting plan B's.
Tongue in cheek :)...
Anyway, have fun with your brother!

Gabi,
I sympathize with your point of view. However, if we get married, how will we retire together to Mackinac and Williamsburg? It doesn't seem likely that we would then be able to terrorize stray tourists late at night while riding on our black horses--unless we could convince our husbands to join us in our escapades. ; )
Speaking of Mackinac, I was there with my family this past Saturday, and we all had a lovely time biking, rock climbing and sitting on the beach. Ty and I even played "Hit the Stick." :) Ah well, more later.
Love,
Ashlea

Hmm... Yes, Ashlea, this is true about our retirement plans... though I'm not sure if I'd marry a guy who wouldn't at least be intrigued by the thought of terrorizing tourists by night on horseback :).
I'm glad that y'all were able to have fun at Makinac. Em and I briefly discussed trying to get together a group for trip up there over spring break or at the very beginning of summer. But we haven't made any plans or such - it's just a thought. If it becomes anything more, I'll let you know :). ...We could teach everyone how to play "Hit the Stick." ;)
